Researchers Mount Sinai Medical Center find that ground zero is linked to lung conditions of workers

 http://www.nytimes.com/2006/09/05/nyregion/06reportcnd.html?hp&ex=1157515200&en=f57ac695af0fde43&ei=5094&partner=homepage

Researchers at  Mount Sinai Medical Center found that dust and toxic particles in the air at ground zero are responsible for the lung conditions of thousands of responders at the WTC. In fact, 7 out of 10 worker have been found to develop some lung condition, including asthma, enthasema, and lung cancer. This study comes after claims from workers, claiming to have developed health issues they never had before working at ground zero, were denied benefits by NYC. Bloomberg when asked about this, said simply(not in these exact words), that you cannot give thousands of people benefits, based on claims.

With the claims now confirmed, the question comes in, who is going to pay the benefits. The claims are the responsibility of NYC, but should all this really be laid on the cities plate? After all, this was an "attack on america".

In my mind, as well as the mind of many city officials and residents, the bill should at least, in part, be picked up by the federal government. There are two reasons I believe this. First, there is the fact, as I already stated, that this was an attack on america. The federal government(particularly the Bush administration), loves to say this. And as I have said before, if this was an attack on america, NY should not be the only ones paying. And second, these claims could literally bankrupt the city. When you consider all the money the city shells out each year, and that all the taxes are barely enough to cover it, and many years have not been enough, where is this money suppose to come from? Are we going to take it out of the fire fighters and cops salary next contract? Or the teacher or sanitation workers? Is it going to come from the budgets of the fire department, police department, transportation department, port security, airport security? What about the schools, or parks, whatever? Pure and simply, the city does not have the money to pay out all the claims. The federal government must step up to the plate.

Why jump from city to federal government? There's a state budget, and from my understanding health claims fall on the city and state, and only in the case of an emergency do they fall on the federal government.

I do understand the connection with 9/11 being an attack on America, but I also have to point out that this has always fallen under state management and it shouldn't be that comfortable of a thing to hand over more responisbility to the government (especially one that you don't trust fully to handle it).

If this was an attack on america, than the responders were helping with a federal emergency..infact a federal state of emergency was declared. This was an emergency..the feds have to pay.

And the city gets jack shit from the budget. Not to mention..the budget doesn't have room for that many claims.

Again I have to ask if you're comfortable with the Federal Government handling a vast amount of medical claims?

Just a question to clarify, are these people who worked at Ground Zero? Or people who have worked around it?

People who responded to it. Not people that worked in the buildings. So the answer is people who worked at ground zero.

I am more comfortable with the federal government paying for this than I am NYC.

Ah, so emergency workers and so forth, right? Well, that changes things a little. I figured was just people who got sick from being around grounf zero too much, not people who actually responded.

Doesn't change my opinion it's a city/state thing that federal government should stay out of, but it's a lot more understandable now. Depends on how much the claims would total to, if there are thousands I really dont want to see that type of money flying around without some strict limits on it. How do you propose the federal government handle it?

Than the federal government should not say that it effect all of america..cause NY is the only state that was left in the crapper.

Yet the federal government carried most of the bill for the clean-up of ground zero. They have a small say in what they call it, I should thank.

Do you ever get tired of trying to turn everything into "This is all George Bush's fault!"?

You're reasoning doesn't go beyond a geographical sense, and even there, you're wrong. The attack occurred in NY, therefore, in your mind, only NY was attacked. That doesn't really work, however, since New York is part of the United States of America, just like every other state is part of the United States of America. From the get-go, you're reasoning as to how this is only about New York or America is flawed. Nevermind the economic, political, and pyschological effects that the destruction of the WTC had on the entire country; even your most basic argument is wrong.

FACT: NY HAS BEEN EFFECT MORE THAN ANY OTHER STATE BECAUSE OF THIS ATTACK!

Physically, yes, it has been "affected" more than any other state by 9/11. The economic impact was one that was felt equally across the country, however, as the economic center of the US was contained within the Twin Towers. Millions of banking statements, stock accounts, and financial records were lost, and the American economy basically shut down.

This is economics alone. There were countless other ways in which the entire country was affected. I don't even know why you're trying to make this into a "Only NY suffered!" issue; is New York not part of America? When did that happen? Again, yes, New York suffered the most physical damage as a result of the attacks; that's why it got the majority of money spent to clean-up the aftermath and to prevent further attacks against the U.S.

NY IS SUB-20TH ON THE HOMELAND SECURITY LIST! And dont forget, that goes to several major cities..not just the number 1 risk, NYC. You have Niagra falls, buffalo, saracus, countless resorts in the mountains, weschester, longisland.

where is this money suppose to come from?

If it's from the state government or the federal government, it still comes from regular citizens' taxes.

New York STATE, you blathering orangutan. Why do you assume I'm talking about New York City when I've only been using the abbreviation for the STATE and have been talking specifically about New York STATE in my previous two posts?

Reread dipshit. "NY IS SUB-20TH ON THE HOMELAND SECURITY LIST!" Lets reveiw. NY is the abbreviation of New York. NYC is the abbreviation of New York City. So if you payed attention...I was refearing to NY STATE, which is sub 20th on the homeland security funds list. NYC does get the majority of that money..but it cannot get all of it. Next time you call me an orangutan....make sure it is not you who is the monkey.

Now, the difference in wheater it comes from the state or federal government...the federal government has more resources, and more funds. That states budget is limited. Futuremore, the federal government can borrow from forign nations, while the state government is only allowed to borrow from the federal government. So if neither has the money....the federal government is the one who has the ability to gain this money, and NY does not.

Furturemore...As an NYSTATE resident, I do not want to see a good percentage of the workable budget, go to paying for an attack on the US. Not NY, the US.

Then why were you talking about CITIES for that entire post?

Second, where the fuck is this "sub-20th" bullshit coming from? New York gets the most Homeland Security grants of any state in the union, even after a reduction of $83 million in their appropriations this year.

http://www.cnn.com/2006/US/05/31/homeland.grants/index.html

New York, for example, will receive nearly $125 million, a reduction of about $83 million.

Homeland Security officials pointed out, however, that New York is still the largest recipient in the program.

This is so easy it hurts.

Ok, wait. This is too good to be true. You keep claiming "NY IS SUB-20TH ON THE HOMELAND SECURITY LIST!" I'm assuming you're talking about this. Please tell me you are, please. It'll make my day. Are you so stupid that you actually looked at this list of grants money to each state and claimed that New York, being the 33rd line on the list, gets less money than 32 other states from the Department of Homeland Security. This has to be a joke. Did you stop to take a minute to see that the states are arranged...

IN ALPHABETICAL FUCKING ORDER?

New York state got $298,350,633 dollars in grants from DHS this past fiscal year. That's more than any other state in the nation, including California, which used to be the number one recipient of grant money from DHS.

My God. How do you dress yourself?

This is code for "you just got your ass served up on a silver platter."

Tell me I'm wrong about your claim that New York is 32nd in line for grant money. Go on, try.

In 2003, it was 32nd. Thats where the difference came in. Now, thats all I will response to until you stop acting like a immature highschooler, and more like an adult, or at the very least, a mature highschooler. This isn't code for anything. Im am simply done with tossing insults and argueing with the person, instead of about the topic.

Lefty:

1.) You have presented nothing to substantiate your claim that it was 32nd in 2003. In fact, you never even claimed that it was in 32nd place until I mentioned that specific number. Hell, you made no mention of the year 2003 until just now. You have no idea what you're talking about. You're just making this up as you go along.

2.) Don't even try to play the "I'm too mature for this!" card. Your entire blog is nothing but one screaming rant after another, loaded with insults for anyone who disagrees with you. Your trying to use this for as an excuse so you can run away from the fact that your argument was utterly destroyed and you were caught with your pants down. I mean, come on, you were basing your claim that New York was out of the top 20 states to receive funding on a list of states in alphabetical order. Even you have to admit that was funny.

It's rather convenient that you suddenly want to "change" when it means you can use it to dodge the fact that you have been completely and utterly owned.
